Numerous guitars as well as other music instruments and items are on display, relieving a bit Thai music history. There are even rarities like the original score of the well known songs “Gor-kaye-sun-ya”(Promised) and “Hen-jai-kan-nohi” (Sympathize me please) displayed. This is to show respect and recognize all Thai Musicians who have contributed to the rich inheritance in our long history of music. Overtone is a music venue where players and listeners gather, talk and experience new friendship. You might just encounter friendship that will last a lifetime. There is something reassuring about finding a bar that is cool for the youngsters hanging out there, and in which you at the same time do not feel uncomfortable or out of place, no matter you are twice the age of the very cute waitresses and other youngsters.

The room is nicely laid out with cool sixties-style sofas and seating, chill out lighting and low tables to hang over as you chat against the music. But it really not a problem as they have a very fine music system and have done a nice job compensating for the potentially bad acoustics by dressing the walls and ceilings to dampen any excessive treble. We visiting musos were very impressed and Her Ladyship and her friends never gave up a minute of chat the whole time we were there, while me and the boys were rocking it out to Sweet and Slade and Elton!

It is a very welcoming place and the staff were great, giving us the star treatment the whole time, and we were paying standard cityholic rates for beer, whisky and snacks, with no tut-tutting when the bill came at 2 am a few hundred baht each using the American Share system for quite a skinful when all is said and done.

Downstairs from Lucifer's disco, Radio City has Elvis and Tom Jones impersonators backed by a good local band right in the middle of Patpong. Very good show band backs Elvis and Tom Jones tribute acts as well as doing their own thing. Right at the heart of the Patpong 'love' scene and has Lucifer's disco upstairs, which also enjoys good crowds. A 'must visit' if only to see the Elvis and Tom Jones impersonators!

Ad Makers Pub & Restaurant

This is a very popular locals' hang out that also attracts a good following of expats. The outside suggests a more elegant venue than the beer hall-style operation within. There is a good bar, but that seems to be ignored in favour of the many bare wooden tables around the various areas.

The food comes from an extensive menu which is predominantly Thai, although there are a few farang dishes, including a pig hock, on offer.

Ad Makers is clearly a place to chill-out and there are plenty of private bottles of JW Black behind the bar as testament to the regulars' preferences. The music is normally provided by one of the better Bangkok bands playing good covers with a strong rock bias.

The name Spice Club may suggest hot and sweaty but that is not entirely the case here, primarily because there are two seating areas. The main area gives the energetic party animal the opportunity to get to the centre of the club where lies, the majority of the crowd. This gives you front row seats to the large stage, that is home to the regular live bands and daily coyote girls.

The club DJ booth is in the centre of the room. The play list is predominantly the latest club mixes and hip hop tunes and party normally goes on until dawn The other area is for the more relaxed clubber where there is an array of soft stools and chairs so that you can sit comfortably, hold a conversation and have a hassle freedrink. However be warned that towards the end some nights the club can get a little rowdy. Needless to say this is because of excessive alcohol consumption by a few of the late night drinkers who occasionally uses those comfortable seats and transforms them into their own personal dancing pedestals: when that happens, either you'll have to join in, or your hassle-free drink may end as part of the decor!

Step across a marble floor, around a long, curved brushed-metal bar and into the cool glow of blue and violet light that helps to set the mood for a jazz trio with vocalist. A black, pin-holed ceiling mimics twinkling starlight. Interior angles are sharp, with muted colours. The restaurant’s private room occupies an overhead balcony.

The restaurant offers modern French cuisine grounded in the essentials of French cooking methods yet generally lighter overall and with a range of intense flavors. The approach allows the executive chef to source his ingredients from round the world. Guests wanting to sample the menu’s starters might try the appetiser combination platter with foie gras, rock lobster terrine, caesar egg salad, frog’s leg and salmon carpaccio. For soup, cappuccino of white asparagus with grilled North Atlantic scallop, quail egg and caviar provides a wonderfully frothy sip. On ordering the entree whole oven-roasted royal Bresse pigeon on macaire potato with caramelised apples and foie gras reduction, and diners are given the opportunity to inspect the bird before final preparations are made.

There is a solid list of wine with the expected emphasis on French vintages of old world regions, such as, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Loire. They are also complemented by new world selections.

Live music from whoever the current cover band happens to be. A spacious pub that's better known for its home brew draught English bitter, Londoner Pilsner and great pub food. Satellite TV for sports fans, as well as pool and darts. This large, almost cavernous, downstairs pub opened about nine years ago if memory serves correctly and there were problems right from the start. Inexperienced owners, microbrewed beer that wasn't very good and a location that was a little iffy for the times contributed to an extended period of aimlessness for the Londoner. But things started to turn around with the hiring of a new GM, David Williamson, a very experienced food and beverage guy and club manager. The microbrewed beer has become quite good, the food is at a very high standard, there are very popular promotions that attract big numbers of people, and everything is just peachy here.

Larry's dive has undergone another remodel and have significantly improved their usable space. The menu remains in tact with quite a nice variety of pub fare, Mexican food, and even the possibility of some pizzas down the road. Wednesday is Open Mic Night - Anyone may play, sing or do comedy. (They would even let me sing!) Every participant walks away with a prize! Thursday is Jam Night including surf hits, R&B and Rock & Roll. Friday and Saturday Nights feature Rhythm & Blues with Tony Love and Sunday you'll hear acoustic guitar and 'vocals from locals.' The upper level has been finished and now sports two pool table and a brand new bar. It's an excellent hang out!.

Hunting may no longer be PC but this pub in the basement of the Landmark Hotel is always correct. House band Sweet Inspiration are a tight unit who perform well arranged covers of contemporary music with great harmonies and, although it's all a bit Radio 2, it goes well with the surroundings! When the band isn't playing, the central bar makes a good focal point and if you're a bit peckish you'll find a good menu of mostly pub grub.

We’d like to recommend “Steak King Size”, a not-to-be-missed dish. This is a beef steak with beef imported from New Zealand, served with fried onions, buttered corn and baked potato. You can have this King-Size dish at 620 Baht with portions for 2 persons.

For drinks, our recommendation starts with “Green Margarita”, colorful cocktail in king-size glass at 450 Baht. Normall, the color of margarita is not light green. However, here it is colored with Midori (melon liqueur). For ladies, don’t forget to try “All Jack Up’, milk green tea at 220 Baht.

The bar type is gogo bar cum music venue with a remarkably serious bad. The service at Five Star is attentive and fast, and the all important beers were cold. The rest of the staff are not pushy and once it becomes clear that a customer is more interested in the band, they leave you alone. Not everyone is there for the music of course, and Five Star still is a go-go bar in Soi Cowboy.

The beer is a pretty reasonable at 90 baht a bottle. The band is good and very tight. They quit promptly at 2.00am.

The biggest club on the RCA strip, if entering from Rama 9 it is truly impossible to miss. This is by far the most popular club, taking up four sections of the street, and normally packed with a Thai university scene.

A fun night, but better to go in a group as if you go it alone it seems a little clicky..

Packed is the right word to describe it.

First thing, make sure you are wearing shoes. They are really strict about that. you really don't want to be in there without shoes with all the people likely to step on you.

The club is packed with young college crowd. More girls then guys obviously. The place is huge and yet it is always packed. They try to server you as best as they can but you might be waiting for service sometimes. Going to the bar yourself is a great idea. Just walk and when you get stuck just dance with the girls next to you. (Disclaimer: worked for me might not work for you. :-))

Music is predominantly Hip-Hop. Mostly English songs. they play Thai songs every now and then but that doesn't affect your mood.

Tazan Disco

Tazan Disco is a Thai disco located in the Sapadin, Kaset Nowamin area of the Ladprao district of Bangkok. There is no public transportation which goes out to this area, and honestly you would most likely never find it anyhow. Your best bet in getting there is to note where it is on the map, have a taxi get you to that general area and look for the traffic, just tell him to go to “Sapadin, near Kaset Nowamin”. There are always taxis parked outside to take people home, so if you catch a taxi out there you will not have any problems getting back.

Tazan is a Thai disco, lots of drinking, dancing, and no foreigners. Most of the people at the disco don’t really socialize with foreigners that often, so the ones that do speak English will make it known as they take the opportunity to practice. Tazan caters to the younger disco crowd, but all are welcome. The disco is open until 3 AM, so many will come here after the surrounding nightlife at Nowamin Road has closed. There is a lot of other nightlife in the area which is worth noting, like Jungle Club, Gotcha, and Immortal Bar, which are all a very quick taxi ride away.

If you are looking for a Thai area, where you will be the only foreigner there, this is a great place. If you want to go out and practice speaking Thai, and socialize with some of the locals, this place is worth checking out. Best of all, if you looking to explore the Thai side of Bangkok, the friends you make at this disco can fill you in on all the secrets of the Nowamin Road area, which has many small clubs, bars, and hangout places, some open until morning.

Gotcha! is located out in the Thai area of Bangkok known as Kaset Nowamin, in the Ladprao district. If you are not familiar with this area, there is no public transportation which will get you here, but a taxi from the city center will run you about 120 Baht. At closing time, there are always a line of taxis in front to take you home.

Gotcha! Pub and Coyote is probably one of the best kept secrets from foreigners in Bangkok. Many foreigners who have lived here for years are not aware that this place even exists, actually, many are not even aware that any of the nightlife in this area of Bangkok even exists. Gotcha! is a traditional coyote show, and very few foreigners ever walk through the front doors. It is mainly upper class Thais who frequent here for drinks and food. It is known among Thai circles for being a tasteful coyote bar, the dancers are beautiful, the Thai food is great and the prices are reasonable. It’s the kind of coyote that you will occasionally see couples out together to see the show.

There is live Thai music everyday, and normally between twenty and fifty coyote dancers on any given night. Gotcha! is a traditional Thai coyote, which means that none of the coyote dancers are prostitutes. This is a place where Thais go to watch the show, have a few drinks, enjoy the music, and maybe buy a dancer a drink to have some attractive company at the table.

Most arrive at Gotcha! and have dinner outside in the restaurant, and then when the coyote gets going around 10 PM they make their way inside. There are also Karaoke rooms and a pool table in the back of the restaurant.

The Players Pool Club is a pool hall located between Sukhumvit Soi 12 and Soi 14. It’s a quick walk down from the Asoke BTS station. The pool hall isn’t exactly out front on Sukhumvit, but you will see the sign pointing to a very short alley way which opens up into the parking lot in the back.

If your game is pool and you’re looking for a place to drink and not wait on a table, this may be a place to check out. It mostly caters to foreigner locals, and has slightly cheaper prices that most of the places which are in the middle of the popular tourist areas. It is a managed pool hall, so all you have to do is shoot and drink. There are plenty of hostess girls who take care of the table, and make sure that you can never see the bottom of your glass.

The Players Club also offers free wireless internet (wifi) to its customers, and its not uncommon to see a laptop opened up during a game. This isn’t really a place where you would want to go to actually get work done, but makes for a great place if you want to shoot pool while waiting for an email to come through, or if you just need to be available online. If you find yourself around the Asoke BTS station in Bangkok and feel like a game of pool while keeping an internet presence this is place is worth a look. The Brick Bar is welded into the back of the Buddy Hotel shopping mall mezzanine, a posh hotel by traveler standards and at the right end of Khaosan Road, meaning at the opposite end from the police station. And this is one busy bar, thanks mainly to the fact that it is literally at the heart of the Thai tourist industry by default.

The Brick Bar has been featuring live music since its first opened, and the music menu is fairly eclectic in as much as the bar features blues, reggae, pop and ska on different evenings and the bands are a mix of local Thai outfits with just a few farang bands chucked in. The Soi Dog Blues Band play here to a full house Mondays fronted by genial Dane Jeff Thomsen and the night we were there – Tuesday – we heard a mixture of pop, blues and ska in the company of young Thais, retired UK civil servants, a table full of Bratislavan sledge designers and a variety of visitors from parts of the world I have never heard of.

But the bar is really a truly impressive red brick baronial hall of splendid proportions with a massive ground floor, huge wooden tables and matching benches, cushioned nukes and crannies, a very long bar, a pool table, fussball and room to happily accommodate 400 punters. Upstairs is reached by two staircases and it is huge up here too with room for 200 more, with another pool table, two pinball machines, its own toilets and its own bar. Very impressive and beautifully constructed with cool woods and great art. And you know someone has looked at Saxophone Bar and others like it to plan and design this great bar – potentially one of the world’s best.

The association between oysters and sex is such a cliché that ordering some on a date is embarrassing. Equivalent, say, to sounding your glass in a restaurant, calling for hush and declaring to a room full of strangers your lustful intentions. Order some at Distil though - an extravagantly styled malt whisky, vodka, wine, cigar and oyster bar up high on the 64th floor of leBua at State Tower Bangkok - and swallowing a few of these most obvious of aphrodisiacs becomes seductive and sexy again...

Lustful intentions and head-spinning views

Not just a place to be seen but somewhere that literally heightens the experience of seeing altogether, Distil gives you nearly 360 degrees of the very finest. Take dusk, when the sky becomes a hazy wash of rapidly disintegrating oranges and reds, and the city landscape below bristles with spikes of concrete and kinetic energy.

From up here, cars whose fumes were terrorizing you on the street minutes before become harmless traces of light, limping their way through the city's glowing rush-hour blocked arteries. Pin-sized boats plough their way through the murky waters of the city's weaving lifeblood, the Chao Phraya River. It's head-spinning stuff - like gazing at a living water colour propped up behind the Blade Runner set in miniature.

You can take it all in with a frosted martini on the open air terrace or recline on the plush cream sofas at its edge, but for the ultimate oyster experience take a raised terrace table - the warm evening breeze and dizzying views for company - or lounge in the darkly decadent surroundings inside, with its modish tables made of onyx. Alternatively, if you want to revel in the shucking ritual performed by the dedicated oyster chefs, sit up at the oyster bar itself.

Seduction comes at a price

There are four different kinds on the menu: 'Fines de Claires' from France, 'Pacifics' from Australia (110 baht each, 650 baht half a dozen), 'Kumamotos' from Washington and 'Tutamagouche' from Canada (160 baht each, 900 half a dozen). They arrive on an elegantly raised silver platter on a bed of ice, accompanied by four great condiments and sauces. Sizes range from the large, almost daunting 'Fines de Claires', which slid down agreeably with some Thai chili sauce, to the cutely shaped 'Kumamoto', delicious with the red shallot vinaigrette.

All are fresh enough to eat straight from the shell, but the firm and fat 'Tutamagouche' with only natural brine for accompaniment was well worth savoring. And a seasonal import, the deeply cupped and plump 'Hamama' (160 baht) worked brilliantly with the lemongrass balsamic.

They go great with vodka (which the Russians favour I'm told) and you'd be on stylish ground with champagne (vintage Dom Perignon '98 goes for 23,000 baht, Diebolt Vallos '98 for 13,500 baht), but most romancers with a budget opt for wine. Prices for a bottle of French white range from a respectable 3,645 to 37,500 baht, and for Italian from 2,750 to 7,689 baht. Choose a bottle from the chilled walk-in cellar.

How to eat an oyster

As to how an oyster is best appreciated, tackle them head on, with a single sexy gulp. Let them slide down the throat, as easily as sin. You'll discover that while oysters on the ground may be conventional, add the altitude of the 64th floor and these salty, sensuous pleasures become the perfect centerpiece to a romantic feast for the senses. Your intentions are still obvious of course, but the Distil experience makes them totally seductive.

Having recently passed the ripe age of 11 years old, Novotel Siam Square Banhgkok Concept CM2 nightclub is never going to be one of Bangkok's devastatingly hip haunts. No Thai glitterati or pop-stars are likely to slink down its steps, no groups of models turn up demanding the red carpet treatment. But who needs them?

The fickle nature of clubs in Bangkok means most that get tarred with the oh-so-hip brush die a slow, painful death when the crowds move on anyway. And besides, Concept CM2, with its undeniably commercial but well conceived events, has been as about as successful as hotel clubs get over the last decade, packing them in night after sticky night.

How exactly? Aside from drawing streams of hotel guests downstairs, this success probably has something to do with the eclectic, something-for-everyone music policy. As long as you're not looking for Bavarian folk music or the latest tech-house beats, and can dance with a hint of 'when in Rome', then you should find a night to please your feet here.

The result: instead of surly models or celebrities you find a multi-cultural mix of all shades, ages, shapes and sizes. Fresh off the planers, sun-glazed couples and European beer boys shake hips happily alongside Japanese execs, jiving Africans and slightly-too friendly girls, all combining to give the place a colourful, eclectic face.

It's also pleasantly unpretentious. Instead of burly doormen who look you up and down while shaking their heads, on our visit during Boogie Nights - a dance-fever style '70s night - staff were donning bouncy afro wigs, Bermuda shirts, and oversized aviators. Those who turned up without the obligatory flairs, medallions and hair chest certainly weren't chided. In other words, despite being part of a swanky hotel, it's a friendly place.

And an enormous one at that - with modishly lit nooks and crannies galore and a cavernous feel, this place is more entertainment complex than club. Take a roam around and you come across places to dance, eat or chat, as well as sit back, play pool or nestle up to a lovely.

The newest of Concept CM2's many finds is Bar @ Siam Square. Dark and snazzy, it's a separate bar aimed at the after work crowd and those seeking pub-style entertainment (open from 17:00 - 02:00). Lots of sleek comfy chairs and 13 plasma screens screening sports, pool tables, arcade games and a pinball machine lend it a definite bachelor pad feel, though the cocktail, wine list and food menu should appeal to girls to. Don't miss the Interactive Happy Hour Game (until 22:00) in which after ordering drinks you press a buzzer to try and stop flashing lights as they shine on 'Free' or 'Half Price!'. Afterwards, the wall here slowly raises, the venue merging with Concept CM2's showpiece: its dark sprawling main room (those dining or drinking here get free entry to Concept CM2).

Focused around a stage for live shows or DJ's, its here that talented house act, the All Stars Band, delivers high energy dance routines alongside lively pop, hip-hop and rock renditions. An eight-strong ensemble, they're a bit like S Club 7, only better looking, easier on the ear and they can play their own instruments.

In between their breathless performances, DJ's Bom, Kriss and Ex serve up similarly commercial sounds, spicing things up with promo competitions and light crowd-rousing banter. If you're not taken with the dance floor there are plenty of raised tables and stools fringing it.

Loud upfront hip-hop can also be found in the adjoining industrial styled Boom Room next door (everyday except Wednesday, when it takes over the main room). With moody lighting, furiously scratching DJ's and TVs screening everything from Snoop to Timberlake videos, it's suitably ghetto and pulls in hordes of Bangkok's bump and grind aficionados.

As you'd expect there's an extensive drinks menu, with cocktails, wines, spirits, beers, even champagne available. Service is quick and friendly with plenty of table waiters roaming the floor. Be aware that all drinks are double-shots - half the time at the bar of course, but then twice the damage! Thursdays and Sundays are when to come if you want to get plastered courtesy of buy-one-get-one-free offers.

One final feather in Concept CM2's glam feather boa is its 02:00 closing time. However, to avoid disappointment be sure to bring ID. A few sage words of advice: there are usually a fair few freelancers (local ladies who ask for taxi money the morning after, but a special one that costs a limousine ride), so be careful who you stumble home with. ;P

Monday nights before 23:00 ladies gain free entry, but otherwise from Sunday through to Thursday entry is free before 22:00, 250 baht before 23:00 and 350 baht after (one free drink included in the price). On weekends, entry costs 450 baht before 22:00 (one free drink), 550 baht before 23:00 and 650 baht after (two free drinks).

Want to retreat from the heat? Here's the right place, though a bit pricey compared to other bars around the area. If you don't mind the pocket burn, it's a good spot to escape the outside heat for a cool drink. A sports bar type place, Bully's features several TV screens and four pool tables. Their menu offers a good range of meals too, including both popular western and Thai dishes. There are a few pool hostesses floating around but they'll leave you alone unless you are up for a game. Unlike many other places in the area, it's closed up and they have the air-con on all the time. The perfect place to recharge your batteries.

Some of the city's hippest and trendiest clubs are found around Sukhumvit Road.

Where in lower Sukhumvit can you drink for a pittance and meet interesting, unsleazy farang? The answer is not some haughty hotel lounge, nor some austere restaurant, but this 20-something Bangkok institution - little more than a wooden shack and a few stools that spill across the street. Every night, a convivial blend of expats and clubbers swarm here to dose up on beers before heading somewhere pricier (at 60 baht a bottle Cheap Charlie's delivers on its name). A definite contender for Bangkok's most bizarre drinking hole, be sure to check out the oddities accumulated over the years - animal skulls, tribal masks and other strange curios (the toilet bares a classic sign: 'no shitting'). Tucked away down a narrow, predominantly residential soi, remember also to be a gent and stand aside for passing cars.

What an adventure this unruly live music bar is. After weaving past security and the snazzy al fresco area, we could barely move for the young, affluent throng. Finding a table, and keeping it, was a mission; as was dodging the toes of fellow patrons as we squeezed our way to the toilet or attempted a dance. Persevere though, because you may well be rewarded: girls with a barrage of hot guys wanting to top up your glass; guys, with a flurry of phone-numbers from cute girls wanting help with their English. Just be careful you don't step on anyone's toes!

Located in Sukhumvit Soi 4, Nana Entertainment Plaza is Bangkok's sleaze central. Notorious for its racy themed go-go bars - from school-girl and leather dominatrix to ladyboy - it's literally a 'sex mall', with three storeys of eye-popping activity all focused around a square-shaped central atrium. Unlike at the better-known Patpong, Nana is a 'strictly adult' scene. That means no families, no markets and few curious tourists strolling in for a look. It also means a lot more men hell-bent on renting bodies.

Walking down Soi 4 from Sukhumvit Road, you'll know you're approaching Nana when you spot the line of street vendor carts preparing an array of weird and wonderful bites. These include 'som tum' (spicy green papaya salad), 'kai tod' (charcoal-grilled chicken) and fried insects, among other odd delicacies - comfort food for the bargirls who mostly hail from Thailand's northeastern Isaan Province.

Young girls in halter tops and short mini-skirts can be found filling up bags of crispy invertebrates, which they chop up and eat with rice and a dash of 'nam prik', chili and shrimp jam (watching them refuel on these down-to-earth pleasures, even joining in, makes for an interesting diversion from the other sorts of pleasures found here).

Welcome to Bangkok's Sex Mall

Greeting you when you pass beneath the monstrous 'Nana Entertainment Plaza' entrance sign is a mass of glowing neon signs, yelling at you from all directions. Shouting even louder than the neon is the intriguing cast of upfront characters - ladyboys, midgets and, of course, girls - who will try and accost you. They can be in your face, but it's all light-hearted and unthreatening.

On the ground floor there are mostly open-air beer bars to choose from. With salacious names like Lollipop and Red Lips, girls here will try and tempt you in for a drink, a game of Jenga and, probably, more. Some will step into your path or give you a gentle jab in the kidneys to encourage you. Others will resort to trying to drag you in - a shrug and a quick side-step is usually enough to shake them off. A few go-go bars line the right side. Playschool, Rainbow 1 and Rainbow 2 all pack them in - both the bikini-clad girls and the punters.

Nights in White Satin

Ascend up the escalator to the first floor and it's mostly go-go bars. These include Spankys, Fantasia and Rainbow 3. Rainbow 4 is one of the biggest, with hordes of Japanese-looking girls attracting a busy mix of Westerners and Japanese spectators. G-Spot, Cassanova and Temptations are among the most popular, and it's no surprise - they're ladyboy bars and put on dazzling shows. Angel Witch, on the left, with its lesbian and dominatrix shows is also a big hit. A lot of thought and energy clearly goes into the costumes and performances here - girls in elegant but provocative strips of white satin were strutting gracefully to 'Nights in White Satin' on our visit.

For relative calm, head for Big Dogs bar on the left corner of the entrance. This is a humble watering-hole, with beers and a raised terrace view onto the street and alleyway.

Soi Cowboy in Bangkok

Named after the cowboy hat-wearing African-American who opened the first bar here in the early 1970s, this red-light district has a more laid-back, carnival-like feel to it than Patpong or Nana Plaza. Flashing neon lights up a seedy streetscape comprised mainly of middle-aged expats, Japanese suits, tourists and gaudily dressed working girls. With cries of 'hello, welcome!' and mock brute-force - a playful arm tug usually - the latter try to lure you into one of the 40 or so go-go bars that line its sides.

Each is dark and noisy, lines of grubby faux-leather seats typically arranged in tiers around a UV lit central stage. The girls sway and shimmy, most wearing little more than an I'd-rather-be-watching-Star Movies expression. When the song finishes (typically thumping techno or anthemic rock) they desert their allotted steel pole as if it's iron-hot. Some run off to touch up their make-up, others make a beeline for their mobile, or their spicy pappaya salad. But most step off stage to mingle and flirt in hope of earning that elusive 'lady drink' and a quick-exit with you; or the next man, or the next...

Top establishments include 'The Dollhouse', where sartorially challenged girls dance with rarely seen enthusiasm. With its transparent glass ceiling and school girls in unfeasibly short skirts, 'Bakara' belongs in a shady Tokyo backstreet - and is thus a big hit with the Japanese. 'Rawhide' features exactly that - raw hides, only alongside choreographed dance troupes that vary from accomplished to atrocious. We could continue, but the truth is that variables - bars, girls, levels of depravity - fluctuate fast in go-go land. Beers vary in price, the general rule of thumb being that the cheapest are found in the tattiest bars. 'Lady drinks' will set you back more, but for the premium expect your companion not to act like one (leg rubbing, dry humping etc).

However Soi Cowboy is more than merely a hunting ground for degenerates. It's also home to some of the city's most outlandish scenery... The street's hue of sleazy pink neon makes everyone look less than human. A couple of times each night an adolescent elephant trudges forlornly down the street, a reflective CD dangling from its tail. Rickety street carts serve protein-rich meats, insects and other unidentifiable snacks to the Isaan girls who comprise the workforce; and shots of mystic herbal whisky - yaa dong - to foolhardy farang. On rainy nights, when neon shimmers off electronic puddles, it all resembles a dystopian backstreet from some sci-fi film-set. Call us sentimental but it's these surreal pleasures, hidden amidst all the iniquity and perversion, that make Soi Cowboy.

Patpong, Bangkok

One of the world's most (in)famous red-light districts, Patpong is where it all started (Thailand's Go-Go culture). It has even been immortalised in a James Bond chase-sequence.

Its two parallel side-streets, found between Silom and Surawongse Roads, house around 100 neon-lit strip bars offering risque sex shows, purchasable pole-dancers and post-op ladyboys. But while for men Patpong is likely to mean 'adult', for women, families and the kids Patpong definitely means 'market'. At night this teems with hawkers and humble stalls selling what is mostly tourist tat.

For the serious flesh-seekers, Patpong has long since been usurped as the 'king of the scene' by its counterparts around Sukhumvit. However, its reputation means it's still a huge attraction, mainly for sightseers more interested in ogling at - rather than indulging in - the carnal delights on offer.

GO-GO Shopping after dark

In fact, because of the Patpong Night Market the area's seedy edge has been softened considerably. At night the area teems with tourists and backpackers shopping for that illusive bargain. Some pretend to look interested in the fake Gucci handbags before temptation gets the better of them and they venture inside to witness one of the famous shows they've heard so much about. If you go for this it pays to be careful; while now rare, there have been reports of tourists being ripped off (especially when buying a drink for one of the 'hostesses') and clobbered with hefty bills after heading upstairs into one of the bars.

Also, if you plan to hijack one of the girls for a raunchy rendevous, it's advisable too to take good care of personal belongings once you've paid the 'bar fine'. However, whatever your take is on the Go-Go Bar scene, there's no denying that Patpong is still far safer than your average Western city centre. It's very well policed - there's a tourist police office at the end of the road, and CCTV cameras - and you'll find entire families nonchalantly walking around during market hours.

When it comes to go-go bars, favoured establishments on Soi 1 include King's Castle I and II, Sphinx and the Safari Bar, while King's Corner has the largest collection of post-operative transsexuals in Bangkok. Patpong II, or 'Soi Quality' as some like to call it, also has many interesting sights along the same lines. Apart from a short run of rather run-down watering holes peopled by girls and men playing Connect 4, the most well-known venue is perhaps Electric Blue and, definitely the most intriguing, Patpong's only fetish club, BarBar.

Food, Fun and Games

For those not interested in the girly scene or shopping, Patpong is also not short on other pursuits. Aside from the shopping, there's a lot of quality bistros, such as the tiny French restaurant Le Bouchon and the incredibly good value Thai eatery Salasawan, both of which are on Soi 2. Mizu's Kitchen on Soi 1, which a former Japanese soldier started in 1954, comes highly recommended for its steak. For a quiet game of pool and a beer or two there's the Red Parrot and the Vietnam war era bar, The Old Other Office. Finally, for audio stimulation there's Soi 1's Radio City (home to some great live music and Elvis impersonators), Lucifer's and the stylish late-night dance bar Twilight, which is typically heaving come midnight. Whatever you're into, Patpong is certainly worth a peek.

A small techno haven situated on RCA claims to focus on their musical selection more than their marketing, buying all the latest techno hits for the die hard fans. The club has one main dance floor directly in front, a small room in the back with sofas, and an upstairs room with another couch overlooking the dance floor. On weekends, expect about 50 techno lovers and some kick ass cocktails. The Moon Shadow, for example, will pretty much wipe anyone out for 500 baht. If you are into small techno joints and strong drinks, this place is definitely worth a visit. Beer 150 baht Spirits (shots) 100 baht Cocktails 180 - 250 baht.

Cafe Democ is café-by-day with mainly tourist customers and an electronic music-

oriented bar at night with a majority Thai crowd. This two-storey graffiti-covered, retro antique-scattered venue is one of the few joints where decent tunes can be heard by DJs from Wednesday to Sunday nights. But Café Democ is unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) a little out of Khao San Rd ., so it can fail to secure the crowds other, less worthy, venues attract. Although it won’t burn a hole in your wallet and the food is actually quite good – try the fish’n’chips for your Britannia fix. Cocktails are 130 baht, buckets from 280 – 350 or a Heineken for 90 baht. Every night hosts a different musical genre with different DJs (Thai and some international) so keep an eye out for their program.

Grey hues coupled with suspended pod-like seats in wrap-around windows, this cocktail lounge designed by Calvin Teo is undoubtedly stylish and of course pricey. Swedish mixologist Ben Sorum heads the bar team to come up with some unusual Asian-inspired concoctions like Tamarind Passion, Mangosteen Martini, and Wasabi Mary. There is, in all honesty, nowhere else like Astro Bar in Bangkok. Owned by a fanatical collector of antique toys, model cars, Vespa scooters and classic movie posters, entering Astro Bar feels like stepping into a vintage memorabilia shop in New York's East Village. Glass cases line the walls displaying a bizarre retro-futuristic array of toy robots, Bruce Lee action figures, vintage Star Wars and Ultraman posters and uncountable other groovy items. A '50s-era Wurlitzer jukebox loaded with Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley records lies behind a welcoming mesh of retro chairs and comfy sofas. It rarely - if ever - feels busy inside, but seems to always retain a warm atmosphere due to an over-abundance of eye candy. Drinks are cheap. If you live nearby, be sure to make this your local. If you don't, then it's worth taking a cab there to relax and feel at home... well, at least as if you're at someone else's home, with better taste.

Perched 61 floors above the city on the roof of the sultry Banyan Tree Hotel, Vertigo and its Moon Bar are tops for great views, less good for staying dry though, since it has no roof. A chic open-air lounge popular with the cocktail-drinking glamour set and Amex carrying ex-pats, the restaurant does good barbecued seafood and boasts some excellent signature dishes, such as Grilled Sea Bass with Citrus Salsa and Cilantro, but mostly you're here for the drink and scenery. Bangkok's cityscape, the winding Chao Praya river and the soccer ball sun sinking below the horizon are best enjoyed with a glass of fine Crystal, or wine and cocktails.

We grant you the soft sofas are more 'Friends' than 'Frank' but it shouldn't stop you lighting up a cigar and sipping on a Jack. The balcony itself is one floor up with a fine aerial view of the soi, plus a karaoke lounge for potential revelry.

Popular gay bar named for the telephones at each of the booths, which give you a hotline to whoever you fancy at the neighbouring table. Might sound cheesy but its cooler than you think, with a simple minimalist design that keeps scene locals and interested tourists more than happy. Split over two levels with several separate bars, it gets ultra loud at weekends but the crowd is relaxed and not too posey. We mostly like it for the jugs of powerful frozen margaritas and plates of tasty Thai snacks.

Another Silom Soi favourite, this one a hot spot for the local in-crowd who come to see and be seen at the outdoor tables. Inside it's split over three levels and more hectic, with weekend clubbers cramming in to bop and bounce to everything from house to hip-hop. But we say slow down, pull up an outside chair, breathe in Bangkok night air and make eye contact with whoever takes your fancy. Bar staff are big on spirits and cocktails which should supplement your courage.

A hip, classy, up-market club-bar located in an all-white building that resembles the villa of some Roman senator relocated to Siam. Ignore Pegasus, the exclusive hostess joint next door, and enters this vast, opulent sun palace with more bars, dance floors and spilt levels than you could shake a swizzle stick at. Music is of cutting-edge international club standard and the DJs doing duty have flown in from all corners of the globe. Sure, it's pricey and posey and your fellow Narcissists are rolling in the money, but wouldn't you want to pay more for drinks, snacks and a magazine-cover clientele like this?

I think the 500 Baht door fee is actually a good idea – you get 3 drinks with that (more or less any drink – vodka red bull for example) so you would have spent the 500 Baht anyway, but the charge keeps the riff raff out – and keeps the crowd more in tune to a proper club rather than the flip-flop and shorts wearing wannabe back packer tourist crowd. Overall a good club, and a good night to be had – definitely a must visit spot on the BK"

Small, relaxed, popular with locals and tourists, it's full of surreal wall hangings downstairs, comfy sofas, cushions and live music. As we passed the Absolute 7 Bar I could hear the live band playing, so we decided to go inside. I’d never been to this bar before, but I liked it immediately. Unfournately no seat avilable inside, so we sat somewhere outside and order our drink, enjoyed the music from the band and a few cold beers (this was in January so nice night). Then we decided to walk around looking for great area.

Finally we found 4th floor a more private meeting, the fourth floor offers a sophisticated and comfortable atmosphere and keeps the crowds and noise away. Perfect place for trysts and business deals, and the wireless Internet makes it a great place to surf the net or get that work done that you don’t feel like doing at the office. And I like it immediately.

Hotshots, near to the Payatha BTS station. It is a small pub and restaurant cheap and cheerful and built on two levels. The ground floor is open for business all day, while the upper deck only opens after 10 of an evening.

The live music on the ground floor level is provided by a duo apparently known as the Duo Band.
They performed both Western and Thai songs and readily accepted requests from customers.

After 10 we moved upstairs to the second level of the bar where a band was playing. The upper level of the pub is new and to be fair, more comfortable than the ground floor. I was impressed with the bar, not just for the essentials on display but as much for the woodwork which makes it a very attractive feature of the room.

This is an all-round nice little operation. The downstairs is for those who want to be entertained but don’t want to shout over the music, while the upstairs is for those who want the music to matter a little more than the conversation.

We don't often get down Khao San Road simply because it is a backpacker's domain where you will meet the great unwashed from virtually every country on the planet.

Shamrock Bar, an Irish theme bar on the second floor of Khao San Center opened. Here a pint of Guinness is 180 Baht and the place is, to say the least, a popular hang for travellers and quite a few locals alike.

Our first priority and there is everything to choose from on the highly-focused drinks menu. Heineken, Tiger, Chang, Leo, Singha by the bottle, on tap or in the jug. There are all the usual suspects from the spirit world with Johnny Walker Black and Chivas Regal at 1200 baht a bottle and JW Red at 900 baht. Get a bottle of Tequila for 900 baht and an evening with Jack will set you back 1200 too. woww!!!...not bad.

And there are quite a few really good pop/rock bands in town and we were lucky to catch one live on stage at the Shamrock. There's no real dance floor, but when hitting closing time everybody is dancing and the whole place is rocking."

What I like best about Bourbon St. is that, if I were to ever have a restaurant, I would want it to be just like Bourbon St. For the foreigner in a strange land, an expat yearning for a break from Thai food, or a Thai looking to sample a spicy Western cuisine, this is the place to go. Comfortable surroundings, helpful and attentive staff, an outstanding stock of fine liquor, and really great food at surprisingly moderate prices.

Bourbon Street serves Mexican Food. There are only a few places in the Kingdom where you can find decent Mexican Food, and Bourbon Street is one of them. The Tuesday Night Mexican Buffet was excellent, although I needed to add some Tabasco Sauce to raise the chili to the requisite level of vulcanism. This place I favorite diner not a drinks.

Morning Night bar is located at the very top of Soi 4 almost on Sukhumvit, and as you would expect in this prime position it is one of the most popular bars in Bangkok. The four tables are in constant use and there are plenty of willing playing partners (female) around should you fancy a game. Of course this bar is more about 'atmosphere' than serious pool.

I love The Morning Night. It's a friendly staff, welcome girl visitor. Laid back place with good western rock music also some famous Thai. They have a couple of pool tables there. They are even open during the day and have a day shift of girls different from the night shift. The rail over looking Soi 4 and the Nana entrance makes for great people watching. The service girl, 430-Ben, 415-Nui and DJ-Thot are so much friendly. Sorry for another friendly staff I cannot remember they are name.

So I will definitely seek out a barstool at Morning Night after work if I am in Thailand and not too tired. Then see you guy.

A great alternative to the cluster of bars just across Sukhumvit Road, this great indoor beer garden on Sukhumvit Soi 3 (just a couple of minutes from BTS Nana station) is quite different than many of the similar restaurant/bars in the area.

I like the place, I should go after work on Friday or Saturday night cause I can wake up late on weekend ;P There nice music live band on Fri & Sat night it surprising with Dutch guy sing Thai music. I impressive with friendly and respectful staff with nice music and cheap tequila (25bath) wow!! It amazing price. Also very cheap a jug of beers. Whewww…..

Walking into soi Sukhumvit 38 you would never expect you see something like this hidden in the middle of busy Bangkok. This place is truely amazing. It's large wooden Thai traditional house. Lanna (northern Thailand) style. (Lanna Thai restaurant) and the other parts are Indian cuisine, Bar,Pastry shop,cafe ..share the area of this beautiful house.

Go there for dinner for the great atmosphere, it's relaxing with nice candle light.

Things you may not like : staff could be very slow and sometimes don't notice that you were still alive waiting for missing dishes you've ordered half and hour ago. But they were polite and tried to do their best already I think. The rate are more expensive then average.

This is regarded as one of the hottest clubs in Bangkok and is worth going to if only to take pictures of the space ship like building in which it is housed. The club is split into two sections, one aimed more at drinking and dancing and the other are for dining and chilling out with friends. As the name suggests the whole concept the club is based on is a bed, they actually have waitresses in rather skimpy but elegant nightwear, and there are actual beds for customers to relax and enjoy. A very unusual but highly enjoyable club, definitely worth a visit.

V9 - WOW!!! A MUST - Located on the 37th floor of the Sofitel Silom Hotel this stunning bar offers some amazing views of Bangkok. The restaurant / bar specialises in wines and because of the novel concept of combining a wine shop with the bar, you can enjoy these wines from all over the world at some of the best prices in Thailand. A bottle of wine starts at around 500 Baht and if you are unsure of what to choose (the choice is very large and varied) then there is a resident Sommelier on hand to give you tips and suggestions. Open from 6pm to 1am this is an excellent place to entertain or just go for a nice relaxing drink, live music is played nightly. The bar is not just about wine though, as there is also a small and spacious restaurant within which serves some excellent food. V9 is a wonderful place to go out, enjoy excellent food, great wines all at very reasonable prices, and enjoy the night lights of Bangkok some 37 floors beneath you. A great place to go as a couple.

Once in a while you get downtown for that important business meeting or to greet a friend or associate staying at the Conrad Hotel, and you need a place to hang and discuss the deal or to just wash away the day with a cold one, and get ready for the evening ahead.

For such things the Dilpomat Bar at the Conrad Hotel was designed. Splendid in its isolation, it is a beautifully lit, warmly decorated, sprawling room with suitable nooks and crannies for couples, yet cool and contemporary with comfort as the underlying theme for what is best described as a very classy cocktail bar ambience.

And it really does sit at the heart of the diplomatic world in Bangkok given that it is within walking distance of the American, Swiss, UK and Vietnam embassies to name but a few. Not that far away and left of the Wireless Road hotel on Sathorn are the Australian, German and French embassies, so the name chosen is not that surprising once you twig.

No ambassadors in evidence while we were in though, but the cute drinks and snacks menu certainly suggest Their Eminences do drop by once in a while.

A glass of Moet Chandon champers will set you back 1,350 baht a glass or 6,500 baht a bottle, while a splash of the Laurent Perrier Brut is also 1,350 a glass and 6,500 baht plus plus a bottle. The Australian version is the Jean Pierre Brut which drops to a much more affordable 320 a glass and 1500 a bottle. The maitre de assured me you get five glasses from a bottle of bubbly, so you do the math if you are undecided at your next birthday party – a glass or the whole hog?

They do beer of course, but who could pass up on a snifter of wine when they have taken so much trouble?

The lovely NSW Chardonnay is 340 a glass, 600 a double glass and 1,700 a bottle while the Oz 2003 Shiraz from the lower Hunter Valley is also 340 a glass, 600 a double and 1,700 by the bottle. The Chilean Sauvignon Blanc is 300 baht a glass and 1,500 baht a bottle and the Chilean Merlot is only 240 baht a glass, 430 a double and 1,200 baht by the bottle.

Given the occasion and budgets we plumped for the Chilean Merlot and very tasty a bottle or two turned out to be too. Before long though, as we waited for the jazz singer to arrive, we noticed a gentle churning in the ‘engine room’ suggesting we might need something to soak up all this fine wine, so got stuck in to the small but impressive snacks menu.

Take your pick Mr Ambassador! Splendid Lousiana Cajun Rolls, Calamares Frito, California Rolls with wasabe, Tiger Prawn Spring Rolls with Sichuan vegetables, all for 250 baht a serving. Kick up a diplomatic rung and you can spoil the Foreign Minister should he drop by with Oysters Thermidor with English mustard and Gruyere cheese or just three raw oysters courtesy of the cool, clean Australian seas (450 baht).

Then there is the Goose Liver terrine, ravioli and pan seared to perfection (600 baht). Or the Lobster Tmpura with wasabe mayonnaise (500 baht), and to round it off, the Italian Cold Cut selection (400 baht) which kicked off our five-star snacking session.The wine got us a bit carried away it has to be said, and soon we had nice little spread going. And how well the food complimented the wine!

A warm glow had arrested us by the time the singer Linda Niles arrived at 9 pm with her band of accomplished players – Roddel on piano, Nilo on drums, Jun on guitar, Suzuki on saxophone and Lito on bass. Spot the odd man in! But Suzuki from Japan of course is a noted jazz musician at home and has recently switched to tenor sax. But he still gives those familiar Bebop lines the treatment every night and is a very sweet addition to this line up, resident at the Diplomat for more than two years, or since it opened, which is when I first saw them.

The layout of the room has been changed since my last visit and the ‘stage’ is set off towards the entrance now where the musicians are more visible to almost everyone in the room, and you can get a better idea from the lobby just what’s going on in there.

You might also be pleased to know that there is High Tea and Chocolate from 2:30 pm until 5 pm every Saturday and Sunday at 350 baht plus plus a head, with classic sandwiches, cakes, scones and the like to pig out on.

The bar opens from 12 noon with a Happy Hour from 4-6 pm when you can get one for one.

The music gets underway 7:45 pm Tuesday through Fridays and from 9:45 pm Mondays and Saturdays

Coyote are fancy a great Margarita humm...I love Margarita..or some Mexican food? There are two Coyote's in Bangkok, one on Soi Convent off Silom Road and the other on Sukhumvit close to Soi 33. Both offer free WiFi seven day's a week and Wednesday's they offer Marg's to women as it's ladies night. A good place to chill.

Hard Rock Café - Bkk

As with all HRC's they are open for dinner and have a live band that starts at 22:00/30.

The restaurant is on three floors with the second looking down on the bar area and stage below. Although slightly cramped around the bar area especially when the band begins, over the weekends it is a great place to meet people and have a great time. One of the greatest things about this bar is the bartenders who actually seem to enjoy their work unlike in some other establishments we could mention and also that the band is so close to the bar you feel a part of it. Beer is very reasonably priced and you should also check out their bottle promotions, recently a bottle of Jack Daniels was on for just over 2,000 Baht. hummm...The first mixers and ice are free of charge and if you don't finish the bottle they will keep it for six months, so you can return at any time within that period present your card and all you pay for is the mixers. This can save you a lot of money. This bar was a winner as one of the best three bars in Asia in the Premier Travel Awards for Excellence.

87 Plus are one of Conrad's bar/club. Definitely worth a visit, but a little small and cannot be compared to the bigger more established night clubs. Thursday is Ladies night so a popular night to go. Drawing a posh local crowd and catering to The Conrad's upscale guests, this is a suave spot for sipping on fine cosmopolitans poured by attentive staff while dancing the night away to polished international live bands. DJs also play quality house and commercial hip-hop. Dress code is smart casual. Between 20:00 - 02:00 everyday it's buy-one-get-one-free Happy Hour.

Spasso - Bkk

Intriguingly billed as an Italian restaurant "and entertainment centre" you might forget for a moment that you're in the Orient at Spasso. In the heart of the fancy Grand Hyatt, the space is fun, lively and crowded and usually packed weeknights with a post-work crowd of execs who come for good cocktails and loud chat. The chat tends to get louder when the local band performs covers from 9pm and although there's minimal dance space, after a few Mai Tais most regulars are shaking their tails. If you come for dinner, take a seat at the intimate dimly-lit bar counter, order a Scotch and soda, and ask for some stock advice from the ex-pat suit standing next to you.

"Prices are scandalous! The most expensive in Bangkok! R'n'B music all the time (boring), weak atmosphere, small disco and staff not so good. There are better places to go."

"One night in Bangkok………" the song sings, well Bangkok will not disappoint. Below we cover, some of the most fashionable places to be seen and some of the places where you hope you won't be seen, so really the question is will one night be enough?! We are not going to talk in great detail of the 'girlie bars' as we are aiming these reviews more at people who are looking for good quality bars in Bangkok where the women are not half naked and swinging around a pole!

Please note that due to stricter laws in Thailand on smoking since February 2008, both air-conditioned and non air-conditioned restaurants and bars are supposed to be non-smoking.

If smoking is that important to you we suggest you call the bar in advance and check. Another unusual and rather annoying trend for many of the top bars and clubs is they have started asking for ID upon entry. It is therefore always worthwhile calling the bar in advance and asking whether a photocopy of your passport will suffice (normally does), if in doubt then just take a copy with you and leave the original document at home or in the hotel safe.
